FAQ

Straight answers about how data brokers, facial recognition, and license plate readers expose your personal information — and how we remove it.

// GENERAL

Dark Scrub removes your personal information from data broker sites, facial recognition databases, and commercial surveillance networks. We also run vehicle privacy audits, social media hardening, and dating app privacy scans.

We serve clients nationwide. All work is done by a real person — not a bot, not a script running unsupervised.

Automated services run scripts against data broker sites and hope the opt-outs go through. They don't verify. They don't follow up. They don't catch the weird ones.

We submit every opt-out manually, verify each one ourselves, and re-check at 30 and 90 days to catch re-listings. If your data comes back, we resubmit. You also get a human you can email directly — not a dashboard and a prayer.

Anyone who wants their personal information off the internet. Stalking and harassment targets. Professionals reducing their public exposure. Parents protecting their families. People going through breakups or divorces. Job seekers cleaning up their digital footprint. Or anyone who just doesn't want their data for sale.

Usually 5-10 business days. Some data broker sites take longer to process opt-out requests — a few can take up to 2-4 weeks on their end.

You'll get a progress update within 48 hours and a full report when we're done.

Data brokers constantly pull personal information from public records, commercial databases, and data partnerships. Your data can reappear within weeks or months of removal.

That's why we re-check at 30 and 90 days after initial service. If anything reappears, we resubmit at no extra charge. For ongoing protection, Watchdog and Overwatch monitor your data continuously and resubmit automatically when something pops back up.

We submit removal requests to every data broker and database where we find your information, citing your state's privacy law. Most brokers process removals within 24–72 hours, but some take up to 45 days. A small number of brokers may refuse requests for residents of states without comprehensive privacy laws. When that happens, we go after them through policy-based opt-outs and other channels.

We verify every result and follow up on pending requests. But permanent deletion isn't something anyone can guarantee — brokers keep pulling data from public records and commercial databases.

Yes. Clients in states with comprehensive consumer privacy laws — like California, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, and others — have the most legal leverage. We cite your state's law in every removal request, which forces brokers to comply.

If your state doesn't have a strong privacy law, we use policy-based opt-outs and other removal methods. We take clients in all 50 states.

We document it, escalate by citing state law where we can, and resubmit through other channels. In covered states, we can file complaints with the attorney general. We'll tell you exactly which brokers refused and what your options are.

Government public records — Court records, property deeds, voter registration, and business filings are maintained by law. We can advise on state-specific options for restricting access.

News articles and media coverage — We can't force removal of published journalism, but we can request search engine de-indexing in certain circumstances.

Social media posts by other people — We can harden your own accounts but can't control what others post about you.

We'll always be straight with you about what's possible. Removing your data from commercial sources kills the vast majority of your exposure — and that's what we're built for.

For facial recognition audits, we'll need 1-3 photos. For vehicle privacy, we'll need your license plate number and vehicle information.

We only collect what's necessary. Everything is encrypted in transit and at rest, and all client data is deleted within 30 days of service completion.

Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

No. Never. We don't sell, share, rent, or hand over client data to anyone. The only third parties we touch are the data brokers and facial recognition databases we're submitting removal requests to — and that's us fighting to delete your data, not share it.

No. We do not use tracking cookies, analytics scripts, or any form of visitor tracking on darkscrub.com. We don't use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party tracking. We practice what we preach.

If a breach happens, we notify every affected client within 24 hours — what was exposed, what we're doing about it. Because we delete data after service completion and don't use cloud storage, there's very little at risk at any point.
